Venting... (UPDATED!)

At church this evening I discovered that the mixing schedule was changed so I'm actually not mixing tomorrow morning. That's fine; it actually takes a little load off of me, but it is frustrating that the schedule was changed and no one bothered to inform me of it. It was frustrating the first time this happened. It was frustrating the second time, too. Now we're up to the third or fourth time in six months or so of volunteering, and that's more than enough!

There has been some progress in that the worship pastor now sends out weekly emails with information about what is going to happen for the weekend services, who is involved, what time people need to be ready to go. That is a huge step forward! I could have--and probably should have--caught the change on Thursday when that was sent out. But I still think I should have been told about the change whenever it was made!

What do you think? Are my expectations too high? Have you experienced this before? What can I do to keep my frustration level down next time it happens (which it surely will)?

P.S. (Yes, Jim, you can p.s. on a blog post) I got my taxes finished, paid my rent, called a friend in Portugal, and started catching up on the dish washing. Now let's see about making a dent on the rest of my Saturday list....

P.P.S. It seems there was a higher level miscue! The lead sound tech thought I was on for all weekend but somehow the worship pastor's schedule showed me only doing Saturday and another guy doing Sunday. It could be that the worship pastor goofed. It could be that there were private communications that short-circuited the sound tech lead and left us both out of the loop. It could be that the sound tech lead somehow forgot that he had changed the schedule. It could be a typo on somebody's calendar. Which of these seems most likely to you?

At any rate, I guess we still need work on those vital communication channels, but now I feel bad for the sound tech lead who is not only caught by surprise like I was, but is also supposed to be responsible for keeping this stuff all straight! I also feel bad for the guy who is probably going to mix tomorrow, because he is actually scheduled for next week--Easter--which is going to be INSANITY from a logistical perspective. I wish I knew if Ray was expecting to mix tomorrow of if he just said "Yes" when the worship pastor called him this evening.... I'll follow up tomorrow.

Saturday Goals

I have big plans for today!

  • Pay rent and cancel my carport
  • Do my taxes
  • Clean
    • Wash dishes
    • Get papers cleared off of, well, everywhere
    • Sweep and mop
    • Vacuum
    • Wash laundry
  • Write to my friend Lucas, who was recently reincarcerated
  • Telephone friends in Portugal

That's a pretty ambitious list given that I am mixing at church for all (four!) services this weekend and will be out the latter half of the afternoon and need to get to bed early so I can get up early!

Drupal Upgrade

This morning I upgraded to the lastest version of Drupal (now at 5.1). Here are a few of the improvements that I've made:

  • The addition of a little math question when you go to submit a comment. That is because I am tired of deleting spam comments.
  • If you view in Portuguese, you'll also see untranslated posts in English.
  • A prettier listing of book reviews.

One of the great things about using Open Source software that is supported by a sizeable community is that there is constant improvement, and if things still don't get fixed the way you want them, you can make the fix yourself.
